Information Technology's Connection to IT Careers

With the fast advancement of technology, the growth of IT jobs has increased at a rapid pace. The projected growth of computer and information technology occupations from 2021 to 2031 is 15 percent, higher that the average for all total occupations (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022). This is huge opportunity for anyone who is looking to change to an IT career and for those already working in the field looking for advancement. This connects IT careers to the fundamentals of information technology being that mostly everything revolves around technology now. Some knowledge of computers and information technology is required and is sought-after by many employers (Herrity, 2023). This may even create more jobs by requiring teaching and on the job training of basic computer skills. This advancement and need for computer skills come from how much technology has changed the daily lives of humans. The shrinking of switches to half its size ever 2 years since the first computer being built, Moore’s Law, in 1940 has allowed for technology to become smaller and more efficient (Vahid, 2019). Moore’s Law has expanded IT careers by not only creating better hardware, but also creating new and innovative software and change the way we use computers daily.

IT careers cover a wide range of job titles that expand into many different career fields. Computer hardware is needed in many IT careers to perform their tasks. A computer tech that repairs computers and other computing hardware must have an advanced knowledge of the hardware in order to repair it. It is also important for an advanced knowledge of programming languages to be perform most IT jobs. Coding is one of the highest paying jobs in IT and has multiple benefits if learned (Meinke, 2020). Ever application and program being used today uses programming languages to operate. Fixing bugs and creating new applications both require extensive knowledge of coding and creates many different jobs opportunities withing the IT field.

Creating and managing a database is another direction to take as a IT career. Many organizations use databases to manage and run the companies. Having a well knowledgeable person running a database can prove to be very important when running a successful company. Databases could include employee’s personal information, a company’s inventory, and even important financial information. Managing these databases correctly would require advanced knowledge of databases and a general knowledge of databases for other workers who need to access them. With so much sensitive information in databases, security is one of the most important topics when it comes to databases and organizations. Cyber-attacks have caused $3.86 million worth of damage in 2020 alone (IBM, n.d.). This has increased the need cyber-security professionals protecting organizational computer systems. This is also due to the increased speed of the internet and global companies. Global companies need to meet and share information across countries and even across the world. An organization’s network may need to be stretch across the globe where everyone working for that organization having access to the same database. This connection across long distances has increased the need for skilled workers who can create and mange large networks. All these things have increased the need for an advanced and versatile IT field that is capable fulfilling all technology needs.
